About the artist:
Taras is your typical citizen of Rotterdam. People who are not afraid to do things slightly different. As goes for the architecture of Rotterdam, Taras is always looking for new ways to find an innovative sound. This didn’t go unnoticed by the house en technoscene. Over the last years he has built up his (inter)national reputation by playing at the major clubs and festivals in Europe. Awakenings, Dancevalley, Paradiso, Club 11, Barcelona (Raum), London (The Egg) and Milan to name a few. His sets are very different from your average DJ. You only have to witness the queues of enthusiasts in front of the Catwalk in Rotterdam where he held long-term residencies. Since 2007 he is also producing: warm melodies, effective bass lines and crazy breaks, that is his style.

10. Class B Band - Dark Bather | Get Physical
11. Martin Landsky - Morning Caffeine | Mobilee

About the artist:
The Man With No Shadow (in Dutch: De Man Zonder Schaduw) – a shady name for a respectable DJ. Gaining notoriety as co-founder and resident of the infamous GZG parties, he is now one of Holland’s most wanted jocks. Representing the underground with a stern smile towards the mainstream, he’s winning over crowds across the Netherlands and beyond. A matter of timing or just a captivating choice of records? Who’s to say. Somehow The Man never fails to supply magical moments. Most recently, The Man’s focus has become more international – especially since he became an intercontinental resident for Sensation Deluxe (2008 – 2011). Headlining the second floor of the world’s largest travelling indoor event and touring thirteen country’s – including Portugal, Denmark, Russia and Spain – has not only strengthened his determination to conquer all corners of the Earth. It also proves that a great deejay isn’t defined by his productions, but by his ability to rock any given dancefloor.

DIRTY MIND MIX #144: Kaiserdisco (Germany)

This weeks DIRTY MIND MIX is from the hottest duo in the House biz: Kaiserdisco. The two Germans present their 2nd mix on our radio which can be best described in two words: just phenomenal!
Tune in at www.dirtymindmusic.com

Both Frederic Berger & Patrick Buck are true boys from Hamburg, Germany. Kaiserdisco signed to MBF in 2008 and have since then accumulated half a dozen top chart positions on Beatport and international fame. DIRTY MIND MIX #143: Robert Dietz (Cadenza) - ADE special

This weeks DIRTY MIND MIX is from German DJ & Producer Robert Dietz. He presents us a special Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) mix. The 90 min. house set is typically Robert: energetic, hot, awesome! Tune in to that firework at www.dirtymindmusic.com

About the artist:
Robert Dietz cut his clubbing teeth on the Frankfurt scene dominated by the likes of Sven Väth and Luciano, but the flourishing artist leaps all musical boundaries. His only guiding principle can be summed up in words of Chuck Roberts: House is a feeling! Beatportal hailed Robert as one of 2009’s “Artists To Watch” saying: he came out of nowhere to land on some of the scene’s hottest labels. And it is true that Robert has made a major impression on A-list imprints including Cadenza and Cecille. He always took the ethos of minimal with a grain of salt, preferring to have richness and emotional texture in his tunes rather than simply follow a trend. It is this mindset, coupled with his superb sense of what it takes to make a club explode, that provides the impetus for Robert’s productions – and his packed deejay schedule. Robert is truly one of the best House DJs at the moment, and if you hear his sets, then you know why…

Saturday 22.

24 Hour Party People at Studio 80
Not really 24h, but at least 16h! The first 8h BREAK NEW SOIL & SOWESO is in control with Karotte, Gregor Tresher and Romano Alfieri. The next 8h MOON HARBOUR & SECRETSUNDAZE is in charge with the mighty Matthias Tanzmann, Luna City Express and many more...

Voltt's club homebase Paradiso is rocking with 3 different floors. Not to miss: Mr. Voltt Bart Skills, the DJ which flew in from Westerpark: Anton Pieete, and not to forget the absolute headliner of this evening and Desolat label owner Loco Dice!

About the artists:
Not many electronic music producers manage to release award-winning albums, sell shelf-loads of 12”s and perform around the world before the hit the big 3-0. But Brussels-based Rodriguez Jr. (aka Olivier Mateu) has done exactly that. As half of French electro act The Youngsters he’s already packed more into his time in the industry than some do in their whole career. Over the past nine years he and his partner in crime have released loads of EPs and remixed tracks by dozens of artists. Their two studio albums - released, like their singles, on Laurent Garnier’s F-Communications - won a string of awards and accolades from some of dance music’s biggest names. This success catapulted them onto the international circuit. While it’s all electronic and put together largely in Rodriguez’s own MLab Mk5 studio in Brussels, his music can be leftfield and experimental or rich, melodic and poppy - depending on his mood. Be prepared for the unexpected.

08. Mark Knight vs. Florence & The Machine - You Got The Love (Mark Knight Remix)

About the artists:
Purveyors of the finest house music and all round party people, The Shapeshifters have been at the forefront of dance music since 2003. At this time, both of the guys had reached a musical crossroads and wanted to do things on their own terms. They decided to go into the studio together and see what came out: the result was ‘Lola’s Theme’. It went on to become a major worldwide hit and set the stage for The Shapeshifters. ‘Lola’s Theme’ also set the precedent for the way the guys work in the studio: let the music come together naturally and forget about genres. Simon’s roots are in funk and soul, while Max comes from a techno background and it’s this fusion that makes The Shapeshifters sound so dynamic and exciting. In 2006 it was time for a new musical focus in a period when the music industry itself was going through momentous changes and major labels losing interest in house. Up stepped Defected and the perfect alliance was formed with one of the leading independent house labels.

Social Media for DJs, Producers, Artists, Managements, Clubs and Labels

Today I want to start a new series here in our blog which combines my passion Electronic Music with my other passion: Social Media.

I will show you here the most important Social Media channels you have to have if you are a DJs, Producer, Artist, Manager, Club or Label owner.

Why Social Media?

It's easy: because it is free! In the past we all had to book expensive advertisement in different media, now we build up our own strong distribution channels and feed only the interested people with our content.

For the first time we can really interact with our fans and target group, we can learn from their comments, we can turn skeptical people into fans and fans into loyal fans.

Today everybody is a publisher. We have Facebook, Twitter, Blogs and we write about everyday things, especially when they are good or bad. Now you have the choice: let people write about you whatever they want - or do you participate and interact with them, even direct them. With free monitoring tools we can see, who writes about us and our brand. With posts, direct messages or comments we can communicate with these people. This we call dialogue!

What do I need for successful Social Media work?

1. You need time. And you need regularly time. Invest almost every day or every other day time in Social Media. Otherwise it's worthless.

2. You need to know where your target group is.

3. You need good and interesting content.

4. Every channel has its own purpose, you need to know which content to place where and how the other channels can support it.

5. You need to know what people write about you. You have to monitor it, then you can react.

You are responsible for point 1 and 3.
My blog series here will take care about point 2, 4 and 5!
Is that a deal? :-)

Which Social Media Channels do I need for my Music Biz?

There are a lot of different Social Media Channels online, take a look at the graphic above! But let us focus on the main channels, which are important for the Music Biz! These are:

1. Facebook
2. Twitter
3. YouTube
4. Soundcloud
5. Linkedin
6. Your own Blog
7. Your Website

and in an extra chapter I will talk about:
8. Monitoring & Statistics

So, get ready for Social Media! Stay tuned!

DIRTY MIND MIX #130: Daniel Sanchez (Netherlands)

This weeks DIRTY MIND MIX is coming from Dutch DJ & Producer Daniel Sanchez. The We Are E artist is presenting an amazing 90 min house music set! Tune in at www.dirtymindmusic.com

About the artist:
Without a doubt, greatness had to emerge from DJ/producer/labelboss Daniel Sanchez. The Amsterdam based artist with Spanish roots was always about thinking forward, creating a buzz with every project he started. From making waves in the early 21st century Amsterdam nightlife to headlining gigs at the biggest events and festivals around the world, Sanchez has grown out to be a familiar force in nowadays electronic music. Daniel performed at events like Awakenings, Nature One, Time Warp, A Day At The Park and Welcome To The Future, tours through Europe as well as North and South America, and of course had a hit record with 'Mumbling Yeah' which dominated clubs and festivals troughout '07 and '08. And then there was Bla Bla, at first an event, but soon also a record label and booking agency where same spirited artists were brought together.

Interview: Paul Hazendonk (Netherlands)

Today we present a new interview on our House Music blog. Paul Hazendonk, Dutch DJ & Producer, tells us more about his new album, his company "Manual Music" and Furrr & Hazendonk.

First, as always, describe yourself in 3 words:
Tall, Skinny, Funlovin'

You’ve just released your album “Sound Shifting: Versatility", we have listened and it makes us curious where you get your inspiration from and what was your goal to create a compilation album like this?
There are actually no deep thoughts behind creating this compilation album. It’s basically a collection of tracks and sounds that shows what you can expect when you see me perform as a DJ. So if you’ve never see me perform before, you will know how it sounds after listening to this double CD ☺

As the subtitle "Versatility" says your album is versatile. This is also clearly seen in the different styles of music per CD. You called CD 1 Body and CD 2 Mind, why did you choose for this? Does it have a special meaning for you?
I’ve always been a little bit schizophrenic when it comes to music haha. A lot of people seem to enjoy categorizing music into boxes and put a label on it, I‘m not like that. For me there are only two kinds of music: the music I like and the music I dislike. For this compilation I could narrow it down to the music I’m playing during my DJ sets only, however it would still be a big problem to jam all the tracks on one CD without letting it sound messy. So I’ve decided to make it a double CD with ‘Body’ stands for as more easy going funk fuelled stuff, and ‘Mind’ stands for the more intelligent melodic stuff.

You have your own multi-faceted music company "Manual Music" with a few sublabels. Can you tell us more about it?
I used to work at the Basic Beat record company (and record store) in Rotterdam, where I’ve run a techno label called ‘Technique’. At some point I’ve got some very interesting demos which I desperately wanted to release, but simply didn’t fit in the sound for Technique. So I decided to start a sublabel called Manual Music, this was back in 2005. The first release ‘Robotfood’ by Petter became an instant classic and soon after that Manual Music became the main label I’ve started to work on. After many years at Basic Beat I’ve left the company in 2009, taking Manual Music with me and next to that I adopted the name for my company, simply calling it ‘Manual Music’. Nowadays my company has six in-house labels, takes care of the distribution for dozens of other labels, we have our own publishing fund, managing some artists and we are hosting events (beach parties, areas). We also used to run our own bookings agency ‘Manual Bookings’ but decided to stop that part of the company, due to time pressure issues (you can’t do it all!)

In 2009 you also started to produce and perform together with Raymond "Qbical" van Baal under the name Furrr & Hazendonk. How did you two come to the idea to work together? And where are you guys working on right now?
We know each other for quite some years now, Raymond is also recording under the name ‘Qbical’ and is a regular artist for the Manual Music label. The sound of us both Qbical and my solo stuff stands on itself, but we both have big interest in other music too. So we decided to start a project together a little bit less serious, 100% focussed on the dancefloor and fully focussed on having fun. Getting a break from all the purists whining and moaning that’s going on. We’re having great fun playing together and our productions seems to find their way to the right labels and deejays too, as we are working with labels such as Diynamic, Neurotraxx, Einmusika, Little Mountain / This Is, SK Supreme, Witty Tunes etc.

You have been producing music for over 10 years now, what were the high and lowlights of your career so far?
I’ve been DJ-ing for over 10 years, but didn’t start producing until approx 7 years ago. I’m still mainly a DJ who started producing music because at a certain point you had to get your name out there to get more exposure and keep the number of gigs on a solid level. In the early years I’ve got gigs because people liked me as a DJ, nowadays you get them because they know your label and your productions. I do understand it from a marketing point of view, but still think that a good producer is not necessarily a good DJ and vice versa. I’ve had many gigs I consider highlights. Playing for infamous venues and organisations such as Awakenings, Dance Valley, Paradiso, Melkweg, Nighttown, Las Palmas, Studio 80 and Doornroosje in The Netherlands are things you can only dream about when you’re just starting out. I feel blessed to have been able to visit and play in many different countries and get the experience in the scenes and cultures there. Lowlights? Yeah of course there are always those gigs where there are hardly any people, or people that come and ask for R&B music... Then you know you are in the wrong place ☺

Can you tell us where you see yourself in 10 years?
I hope I’m still actively working in the music industry in some kind of form, maybe as a DJ/producer, but maybe behind the scenes. I’m not the kinda person who has a year-to-year planning to be honest. I used to plan ahead a lot, but when my father died one day without warning I realised that it’s better to capture the moment and don’t worry too much about what the future will bring...

What are you working on right now?
I’m currently working on a solo remix for a new Giorgos Gatzigristos release which will be released on Eelke Kleijn’s Outside The Box label. Just finished up on a new release I’m doing together with Luke Mandala on my Stolen Moments label + there are two releases coming up on big (German and Dutch) labels, but I can’t mention it yet (aaarrgggh!). On one of these releases I work together with Tundra. With Furrr & Hazendonk we are currently wrapping up remixes for Strom Recordings (James Nidecker’s label) and Jeroenski (for our own Melomane label). Our new single on Melomane is coming up too, which will include remixes by Love Girls and Leonardo Gonnelli. I’m doing a monthly solo show on Proton Radio called ‘Hazendonk FM’ + together with Robin (Cinematique) and Qbical/Furrr I’m hosting the monthly Manual Movement radio show on XT3 Radio. Next to that I’m running my Manual Music company on a day-to-day basis and looking forward to playing at numerous clubs, beach parties and festivals this summer, including my debut in Canada which I’m very much looking forward to!

Please write spontaneously a short comment for each of the following terms:

Interview: The Man With No Shadow (Netherlands)

The Man With No Shadow (in Dutch: De Man Zonder Schaduw ) – a shady name for a respectable DJ! We take a closer look at one of Holland's best DJs and talk about his unique style, Sensation White and his party row Gasten Zonder Grenzen (GZG):

First, as always, describe yourself in 3 words:
Well, okay... let’s say intense, creative and straightforward.

How did your DJ career start and what was the key for your success?
My career started with a lot of partying, then organizing parties myself and after that playing at those parties myself. The GZG parties were the first that got really serious. I think the key for my success was a basic one, I managed to share my love for the music and the scene through organizing and playing. In other words, I had my own platform and a sense for the crowd.

Your DJ sets are always very special. How would you describe your own style?
First of all, thanks! I spend a lot of time to get my sets unique and special but it’s also important for me that it’s effective. I like to get the party going, but I also love the intelligent twist. Musically, I think I combine the power of techno with the magical moment. But, there’s a lot to do before I get where I want!

What is your setup when you are deejaying? Do you use Records, CDs, Laptop, Software, Effects? Why?
Right now, I use two CD players and a mixer. I focus on record choice, mixing and the crowd. That’s already three things and that’s enough for me when playing.

You have also played at Sensation White. How is it to perform in front of thousands of white dressed party people?
Ah the Sensation thing, you’re not the first that’s asking me about it. Some weeks ago somebody said on national radio that I was Mr. White, Sensation’s white faced resident. Since then I get a lot of questions about it, but to be honest, I don’t know. I always play in the Deluxe areas, so if you ask me how it is to perform for thousands of white people.. I wouldn’t know ;-)

I understand :-) Then tell us more about your great party row GZG – Gasten Zonder Grenzen.
This has been an interesting year for GZG. After seven years we have grown in popularity and size and I am so happy to see that we managed to keep the vibe at our parties that sets us apart. Actually, it seems as if it’s only getting better and that inspires us to stay true to our roots. Our Zomerpark festival in June is a good example, we’re planning a lot of crazy stuff, but the basic principle of ‘One Day, One Stage, One Festival’ stays the same.. it’s going to be really special.

Please write spontaneously a short comment for each of the following terms:
Amsterdam: “we’ve only just started”
Berlin:
“sleep is commercial”
Ibiza: “get me over guys”
Best Club: Berghain
Best Recordlabel: Cocoon

DIRTY MIND MIX #124: Ernesto Ferreyra (Cadenza)

This weeks DIRTY MIND MIX is coming from Argentinian DJ & Producer Ernesto Ferreyra. After Mexico and Montreal he is living now in Berlin. Ernesto is the first Cadenza artist we feature on our internet radio. Tune in at www.dirtymindmusic.com

About the artist:
Born in Argentina, Ernesto Ferreyra travels the world in pursuit of musical enlightenment. From Mexico, to Montreal, to Berlin, the newest member of Luciano's heavy-weight label Cadenza proves rhythm knows no borders. Ernesto moved to the maelstrom of Mexico City, where he lived for three years, DJing all over Mexico and taking the first steps in his production career. Next, he moved to Montreal, drawn by the vibrant creative culture of Canada’s electronic music hotbed. There his production career moved into high gear, driven by friendships with MUTEK artists, in particular Guillaume Coutu Dumont, who he records and performs with under the Chic Miniature moniker. It wasn’t just the creative talent that spurred Ernesto. “The cold helps too,” he jokes. “You wind up buried in your studio working all the time.” Now Ernesto is in the electronic music capital Berlin. His gigs at the world’s best clubs include Berlin’s Watergate and Berghain/Panoramabar, Tokyo’s Yellow, Spazio 900 in Rome and Pacha Ibiza.

Summer Jobs in Ibiza - Tips from an Expert

Many young people, who love electronic music, dream of having a seasonal job in Ibiza. I talked to my friend Jörg, he is German and he is working for over 10 years every summer in the NEW GARDEN bar in Playa d'en Bossa. There he is responsible for selling club tickets. Jörg is a true Ibiza expert and is answering the most important questions about summer jobs on the White Isle:

Is it easy to find a seasonal job in Ibiza?
Yes! There are many possibilities: working in a hotel, restaurant, bar or club, making promotion for parties, selling club tickets, etc.

How do I get a job in Ibiza?
The easiest way is to fly to the island before the season really starts. So come beginning of May and just ask for jobs, where you want to work.

What about the languages?
A lot of people who start to work here can not speak Spanish. Of course with Spanish your life is easier in Ibiza, but it is also a good chance to learn the language. So be open minded and interested. Ibiza is a tourist island, the more languages you speak the better. Besides Spanish the main languages are English, German and Italian.

How are the working conditions?
Most of the jobs are during the evening and night, so it might be you work from around 8 pm to 4 am (or later) every day. The season only lasts about 4 months, so usually you work this period and without any day off! With a normal holiday job you will not get rich here, but most likely you come here for sun, fun and meeting cool people, instead of money making. You have here the beaches and the parties next to your work, so it can be very exhausting, but for sure it is a once in a lifetime experience. Do not expect all the time holiday, it can be a hard job. And the coolest job ever. If you like electronic music Ibiza is your paradise. Many workers return every season to the island.

Where do I live?
If you are working for a hotel then most likely you will get a room there. Otherwise you have to take care about this yourself! The housing situation in Ibiza is not the best. If you can share a room with someone else you have to pay around 200 - 300 EUR a month. If you want the room for yourself it will be around 400 EUR. An own apartment costs 1200 - 1600 EUR a month!

Can I come to Ibiza without money? I will earn money there.
Be aware you have to come to Ibiza in May, but most likely you start to earn money beginning of June, when the main season starts. Most likely you get your monthly wage end of the month. So you have to live the first 2 months from your savings! When you rent a room or apartment the landlord wants a deposit (around 2 months rent) and the first rent.

Do I have free entry to the clubs?
If you are selling club tickets or promoting parties you will get a certain kind of identity card, which allows you to enter the clubs for free. This saves you a lot of money during the season! The club entry is usually around 30 - 70 EUR a night.

Interview: Katherine (Whirlingturban, Bali)

Today is the start of a new series here on our House Music blog. I want to introduce you to very interesting fans of our internet radio. Like Katherine, a fashion designer, who worked in New York and for the entertainment industry in Hollywood. Now she is in Bali, creating Bombshell Dresses & Pinup Couture. Let's have a closer look:

First, as always,
describe yourself in 3 words:
Manic Dress Nun

Katherine, you are a fashion designer focusing on Vintage Style Dresses. How did your career start?
Actually, I started designing for myself and sewing as a teenager because I grew up in a (real) cowboy town where I couldn’t buy the clothes I wanted. I fled the cowboy town at 18 and worked as a designer’s assistant in San Francisco during the great days of Gay Liberation and the birth of club culture, before the plague, then thru the formative years of punk; another great time to be in San Francisco.
In the 80’s, I went to Manhattan - still my favorite U.S. city - and worked as a patternmaker and designer on Seventh Avenue and for an Upper East Side boutique that made leather clothing for celebrities.

Then you moved to L.A. and created also costumes for Hollywood’s entertainment industry. For example Uma Thurman and Salma Hayek wore creations from your studio.
That was immense fun since, in Hollywood, money is no object; the object is bringing something from the imagination into reality in the most perfect and gasp-inducing manner possible. The greatest garment craftspeople in Europe are in Haute Couture. In the U.S., they are in Hollywood - the pinnacle of the craft is there and it’s a very satisfying and exciting way to work.

Now you are in Bali with your company “Whirlingturban - Bombshell Dresses & Pinup Couture”. How did you end up there and what are you doing exactly?
I seem to have about a ten year attention span with cities. I came to Bali on a month long vacation between movie projects when I lived in L.A. and within a week I knew I wanted to have a life here. I had already done the best cities in the U.S., with L.A., as a city, being a disappointment after being spoiled by the cultural choices and brilliant minds in New York.

Bali is a crafty-person’s Disneyland, so the creative possibilities seduced me. Also the entire sense of reality is radically different here on the most fundamental level. The chance to expose myself to a culture and worldview that would challenge my entire concept of the nature of existence was something I was ready for and could not resist.

I moved to Bali to make clothes but my first entrepreneurial idea did not work out. I ran out of money and for a year, as I scavenged any work I could find, I spent night after night for hours on ebay, looking at what kinds of clothing sold well. I found that vintage Hawaiian dresses went for great prices on ebay and wondered how a flawless reproduction would be received. I made a reproduction Hawaiian dress that I felt had everything the originals had except the age. To my delight, I found a home selling to vintage dress collectors and eventually moved away from ebay to my own website, Whirlingturban.com.

What is fascinating you about the fashion of the 40's and 50's?
These two decades call to designers repeatedly. I don’t believe that you can find a single season of fashion where some element from one of these two decades isn’t stir fried into the mix somewhere because these were just incredible decades for fashion. Also, both of these decades emphasize, in different ways, the extreme feminine figure and “X” shape with width at the hips and shoulders or bust and narrowness at the waist. That balance is appealing to the eye and the sense of aesthetics, sexy and so primal that it will never lose its appeal as long as humans maintain an interest in reproducing.
In addition, riffing on these two decades lends a peppering of tongue-in-cheek kitsch/camp that is essential in what appeals to me, my customers and fellow vintage enthusiasts.

Who are your customers and for what occasions do they buy your dresses?
Besides the above aesthetic point of view and taste that I share with my customers, more than 90% of Whirlingturban customers are either artists by profession or are deeply involved in the arts. They tend to have curves and they like to be noticed. Virtually all Whirlingturban dresses are purchased for a specific event at which the woman wishes to make a strong artistic and erotic statement. Today more than half the dresses we make at Whirlingturban are for alternative brides.

I know you are a fan of our radio station DIRTY MIND MUSIC. How did you find us and why do you like us?
Since fleeing the cowboy town in which I grew up I’ve been an addict of urban culture. Little did I know when I moved to Bali that I would be isolating myself from the urban culture I love. I thought I was moving to an international artist’s colony but I find myself back in a small town. I love what I do here creatively and am I’m devoted to it. But I miss urban culture acutely.

I stumbled across Dirty Mind Music while searching for house music on the internet and it was love at first listen. There is NOTHING else like it. I sit in my little tiki hut on a tiny island in the Indian Ocean and urban culture at its finest visits and minsters to me. My mind teleports to Berlin where it communes with gourmet beats and kindred spirits.  I LOVE Dirty Mind Music!
